Individual Psychotherapy Session

Our individual psychotherapy sessions are designed to help you address personal mental health challenges and work toward your goals.  These one-on-one sessions provide a safe, supportive space to explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, while building resilience and coping skills.

At Bay Area Counseling & Consultation, our providers are trained in trauma-informed care and take a patient-centered, social justice-informed approach.  We meet you where you are, tailoring treatment to your unique needs, and use evidence-based modalities to guide therapy.  Throughout treatment, we track progress through analyzing psychometrics and track data regarding symptomatology.

What to Know Before You Go

  • The first session is about orientation – not therapy yet. You’ll meet your therapist, discuss why you’re here, and start building rapport. Expect a lot of questions about what brought you in and what you want to work on. It’s totally normal for this to feel a bit like an intake interview – that’s how clinicians gather the context they need.
  • Plan to fill out paperwork ahead of time or when you arrive. We ask that you complete intake forms that cover your personal history, symptoms, contact details, and insurance/payment information. Getting this done before your appointment helps the session focus on you instead of admin.
  • Confidentiality is real – and there are rare legal limits. Everything you share is protected by privacy laws and ethical codes. Therapists often explain these boundaries – including exceptions like immediate risk of harm or danger to others – before you dive into content.
  • Be prepared emotionally – and physically. It’s normal to feel nervous, unsure, hopeful, or all three at once. Showing up well-rested, with notes on what you want to cover or goals you have can help you make the most of the time.
  • This is a process, not a one-shot fix. Your first session sets the foundation. Real progress usually starts after a few visits once trust and understanding deepen.

FAQ

  • What should I expect at my first session? It will mostly be conversation about why you’re seeking support, your goals, and your history. Your clinician will also explain how they work, confidentiality, and answer questions – the goal is connection and clarity, not immediate solutions.
  • How long will the session last? Typical individual sessions range from about 45 to 60 minutes. Depending on paperwork and intake requirements, your first visit might run a bit longer.
  • Do I need to bring anything? Bring your ID, insurance card (if applicable), any intake paperwork you were sent, and a list of medications or health history if relevant. It can also help to bring a few notes on what brought you to therapy.
  • Can I talk about whatever I want? Yes — but you don’t have to unload your entire life the first day. Start with what feels relevant or pressing. Your therapist will guide the pace and topics with you
  • What if I feel uncomfortable sharing? That’s expected. You’re not alone — many clients feel awkward or hesitant at first. You can always say, “I’m nervous,” and that bit of honesty is usually helpful. Building trust takes time.
  • What if therapy isn’t clicking with me? Therapy is a professional relationship. If you don’t feel understood or supported after a few visits, it’s okay to discuss that with your therapist or look for someone else who fits your style better.
  • Will my insurance cover this? Coverage varies by plan and provider. Call your insurance ahead of time to verify benefits, or ask our office for help with verification.
  • Is telehealth available? Yes — and whether you choose in-person or virtual sessions, make sure you’re in a private, quiet space where you won’t be interrupted.
